![]() ![]() So this koala is broke and comes up with a totally original idea of a singing competition. So we're in spoiler territory here, but trust me watching this abomination with the idea of the plot in mind won't affect your abysmal enjoyment. This movie was so forgettable I literally can't remember anything. So why do I care? These people genuinely didn't care about their characters and the only excuse for personalities is to have rich celebrity tie-ins like. I mean, it has the same character progression and plot as an advert. I'm gonna stop right there because I'll just stick with my point that it's a massive advert. I'm sure you've all seen the trailer where it's the singing montage with a song that everyone is guaranteed to know at least one of. To be honest it's a giant advert, most of the scenes are made just to have a funny moment in one of the trailers. This movie doesn't have a normal flow to it, with multiple characters with their own arcs and stories. One of the things I thought about while going into this movie was 'With all the characters in the competition, who's going to win?' well apparently the idea of winning is too complex for Illumination, so everyone loses. Then finally, my all-round favorite, for edgy teen boys like me, is the gorilla who tries to impress his father. For those of us, like me, who are shy there's the elephant, who also has a stereotypical black family, so that covers two demographics. porcupine? The character was so bland I can't even remember. For edgy teenage girls there's the punk, rock rebel. He's voiced by Seth MacFarlane, and the character's goals are purely monetary, ironic coming from the Family Guy guy. How she starts becoming a singer is a bit odd and a weird message, the husband can't take care of the young kids, so she leaves them? To become an egotistical megastar? Really? There's the arrogant mouse which everyone hates, he's also a rich megalomaniac who is genuinely talented but is just a bit of an idiot. children, and a husband that is too bogged down in work to do anything. For mother's there's a pig, with around twenty children who never became a popstar due to the. For stupid children there's the fat pig who's only good for the #epiclolz. There's a character to pander to everyone. ![]() This movie panders to around every audience. They only bothered to design around five locations which are re-used for no affect. They're simplistic at best, they try to pass them off as cute. They re-use the same models over and over again, they barely bother to even make them look good. But the thing I have with this movie on the animation front is the assets. Didney, Dreamworks, basically almost every company. It's not like Illumination is the only movie that uses this kind of animation. The least amount of effort has been put into this movie. If you have been reading reviews from this on CSM, there'll be many people saying 'Oh well it's a good movie' well it isn't. The company that made this movie, Illumination, is an egotistical cash-grabbing fraud. And while the movie clearly promotes trying hard, being brave, working together, and following your dreams, it also has some stereotypes and mixed messages about lying, parent-child relationships, and the value of motherhood/homemaking. There are also slapstick laughs, silly jokes, risque moments (from bunny singers waggling their bottoms while they sing "oh my gosh, look at her butt!" to a pig husband passionately kissing his wife after she performs in a sexy costume), and insult language ("stupid," "porky," etc.). But note that there's some peril/danger: Angry gangster bears try to kill a cheating mouse, a gorilla thief is mean to his son, and a building collapses spectacularly, putting many key characters in danger. The A-list voice cast, reality talent show premise, familiar pop songs, and cute animal characters make this an appealing pick for families with young kids. It centers around a theater-owning koala (voiced by Matthew McConaughey) who decides to run a talent contest to boost ticket sales for his financially flagging theater. Parents need to know that Sing is an animated comedy (with tons of music/singing) from the producers of the Despicable Me films.
